1. Why are you running for Chairman, Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners?
Answer: I feel with my 51 years of experience helping businesses and my law enforcement background, and I will be a positive influence in all that I do to make things better for my children, grandchildren, and the citizens of Gwinnett.
2. Where are your favorite places to spend time in the Gwinnett Place area, and why?
Answer: There are several restaurants in that area I enjoy, along with some retail establishments.
3. What do you see as the role of CIDs in Gwinnett, and how would you work with the Gwinnett Place CID, if elected?
Answer: CID’s role is to gather comprehensive information to have a good grasp of what is needed and feasible.
4. If elected, will Gwinnett Place be a priority for you? If yes, what is your vision for the Gwinnett Place area?
Answer: Gwinnett Place is centrally located and so important to the image and financial success of the area, and it would have to be a priority.
5. What is your vision for transit in Gwinnett County?
5b. How will you bring transit to Gwinnett Place?
Answer: My vision would be, begin with any type of additions of new tenants even with a discounted lease rate just to get some momentum while looking at a broader scope of plans such as schools or other types of training centers. Once there is a positive activity, it will be more attractive to potential businesses. We have to consider building structure and changes that would need to happen in conjunction with adding tenants.
5c. Do you endorse the Transit Review Committee’s plan submitted to the Board of Commissioners in February?
Answer: I would have to get more involved with past studies, knowing that there is a great need to improve a transit system of some type. Having spent over 50 years working on the issues of private business and industries, I have not been as updated or involved enough to suggest any specific transit options.
6. Gwinnett Place Mall has extended beyond a local issue to become a national punchline, around the topic of the “dead mall.”
6a. How will you address Gwinnett’s dead mall problem?
6b. If elected, what would be your plan for the mall site?
6c. How will you work with the Gwinnett Place CID to accomplish your plan?
Please refer to Question #4. It has coordinated effort with all parties having a voice.
7. During the last SPLOST, of the $486,343,270 in transportation funding available, the Gwinnett Place area only received $9 million. Had the CID not had a list of potential projects prepared and shared information about transportation needs in the area with SPLOST committee members, it is likely even less in SPLOST transportation funding would have been allocated for the area. How will you ensure greater equity in future SPLOST funding distributions for Gwinnett Place?
Please refer to Question #5 The response relating to transit would also apply to questions about SPLOST. As I do with the business that I help, it is necessary to meet and talk with those that have ideas, thoughts, information, and documentation before I can come to any conclusions or make any assurances.
8. Gwinnett County and the Gwinnett Place CID collaborated on the ACTivate Gwinnett Place plan focusing on area infrastructure. However, most of the projects outlined in the plan are not fully funded. What is your plan to address this issue and move these projects forward?
I would have to determine why projects were not funded and why additional funds were not allocated. There may have been other priorities, and I do not know. I don’t know the circumstances.
